When the No. 3 state-ranked Westlake boys basketball team comes into Newnan tonight to face the Cougars in the Max Bass Athletic Center, they come in as one of Georgia's most successful programs over the last five years.
During that span Westlake has posted a 127-21 record, including a 20-2 mark so far this year and the Lions have reached the Final Four in either Quad A or Five-A three times including playing for the state championship in 2006, the year they won 32 straight games.
This year's team lost its two games by a total of seven points, falling to Ridgeway (Tennessee) by six in the Memphis-Atlanta Classic on Dec. 28 and to Morrow on Jan. 19 by one.
They have gone 10-1 since the Ridgeway loss and have reeled off five straight wins since the Morrow defeat.
The Cougars (13-7) have won nine of their last 11 and are coming off a hard-earned 73-65 win at Morrow on Tuesday in the same gym where Westlake suffered one of its two losses.
Newnan lost at Westlake on Jan. 5, 63-45, but was very much in the game at halftime, trailing by just seven points.
Last year Westlake won two of the three meetings. Both teams went on to make the Final Four, Newnan losing to Milton and finishing a school-best 26-4 while Westlake came in at 25-7.
The task for the Newnan Lady Cougars isn't any easier. Westlake's girls are 17-3, leading the region by two games over Mundy's Mill and are ranked 10th in the state.
East Coweta plays at Mundy's Mill tonight. The Indians, who were beaten at home by Creekside on Tuesday, 84-71, are 8-12 overall and 5-10 in Region 4-AAAAA play. East Coweta beat the Tigers at home on Jan. 5, 77-52.
Mundy's Mill won the first meeting over the EC girls in the John Thrower Gym, 58-49.
