Depending on one's definition, Northgate's boys basketball team enters the postseason having already either broken or tied its school record for victories in a season.
Regardless, the Vikings' late-season surge may make them a tough team to beat in the Region 3-AAAA tournament starting with their opening-round game Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Fayette County High.
Finishing with a flourish as the No. 5 seed from the 3B-AAAA subregion, Northgate's boys open the postseason against Woodland (11-13), the fourth-place finisher from 3A-AAAA.
The Vikings enter on a roll after recording their 12th victory of the season last Saturday by defeating McIntosh, the second-place team from 3B-AAAA to close the regular season.
Northgate, which added a 13th win in the preseason that sets a new school mark for boys victories over an entire basketball season, enters with five wins in its last seven games. The team also gave top-ranked Fayette County a run last Friday, taking a one-point lead at halftime.
Thursday's winner moves on to face Fayette for a chance to reach the Class AAAA state playoffs.
Woodland had lost six of its last eight games heading into Tuesday's regular-season finale at Heritage of Conyers.
The Lady Vikings begin play on Saturday at 6 p.m., also against Woodland, which earned the No. 2 seed from subregion 3A-AAAA. Two of Northgate's five wins came in the last two weeks of the regular season.
Woodland's girls enter the postseason at 18-7 overall after finishing 9-3 in 3A-AAAA, and earning a tiebreaker with Dutchtown for second place.
