Newnan tennis teams picked up respective victories on Thursday at M.L. King to both close a busy week and clinch a No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region 2-AAAAA tournament for the Lady Cougars.
In the girls victory, Newnan didn’t allow a game to the Lady Lions while bouncing back from Wednesday’s 4-1 loss at Grady. The win over M.L. King kept the Lady Cougars unbeaten in 2-AAAAA at 6-0 while clinching the top seed in the region tournament on April 12-14 at Richard Craig Park in McDonough.
The Cougars shook off a pair of losses over consecutive days, including a tough 3-2 decision to East Coweta, by dominating M.L. King in a 4-1 win.
Newnan coaches used Thursday’s match to shuffle the lineup a bit, especially after two consecutive top-notch opponents. Lady Cougars Hannah Hutson and Jasmine Hines got a chance to earn a victory at No. 1 doubles with a convincing 8-0 outing. Singles matches saw both Barkley Yancey and Katie Gordon earn shutouts at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, while Mary Margaret Taylor won by forfeit at the No. 2 spot.
In boys action, top Cougar singles player Cole Duffey tried to rest a hip pointer while playing with Parker Griner at No. 1 doubles for an 8-0 victory. Mikey Miller moved into the No. 3 singles spot, also winning 8-0, while Jack Tucker responded while moving up to No. 2 singles with a shutout win as well.
M.L. King’s only victory came at No. 1 singles over Newnan’s Landon Goolsby.
