Spring Sports Roundup: Northgate tennis teams swept by Starr's Mill

The Northgate tennis teams might have been swept by Region 4-AAAAA foe Starr's Mill, but the boys kept it close before losing 3-2.
It was a tough day for the Northgate girls, who fell 5-0.
In boys action, Northgate picked up singles victories from C.J. Evans, who defeated Miguel Gonzalez 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot, and Larry Sloan, who knocked off Andrew Dehany 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
The match turned in the Panthers' favor after Northgate's No. 1 singles competitor Hayden Victer lost to Duebie Dubin in a three-set thriller 6-3, 4-6, 7-10.
Northgate also lost both of its doubles matches as Cole Chenowith and Derek Kinsch fell to Shaaz Peerani and Blake Traeger 6-0, 6-3.
Teammates Austin Horvat and Bharath Shankar fell to Nick Borovsky and Alex Borovsky 6-2, 6-0.
In girls play, Northgate's Danielle Rankin (6-4, 6-1) lost to Emily Shull, Lauren Handley lost to Sam Curis (6-2, 6-0) and Hayley Hasberger lost to Amanda Nima (7-5, 6-1) in singles.
The Northgate doubles teams of Mary Salyards and Avery Weatherford lost to Mary Katherine Floyd and Shannon McKillip (6-3, 6-2) and Larien Bown and Mary Salyards lost to Cassidy Sparkman and Hannah Noltimier (6-2, 6-0).
In exhibition play, the Lady Vikings received a win from Sadie Proctor and Lauren Schexnayder in a 8-6 victory over Megan Beck and Irene Valli.
SOCCER – NEWNAN SWEEPS EAGLES LANDING: Danquez Sinkfield held Eagles Landing scoreless through halftime and Newnan's boys soccer team opened the floodgates in a 7-1 non-region victory over the Golden Eagles on Thursday at Drake Stadium.
Tyler Heard scored twice while Kevin Morgan, Nick Pelerose, Victor Dominguez and Marquel Ross were among Cougars that also added goals in the victory for Newnan (6-2), which was coming off Tuesday's 5-0 Area 3-AAAAAA victory at Langston Hughes.
The Lady Cougars improved to 5-2 overall by blanking Eagles Landing 6-0. Newnan's girls improved its record to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in 3-AAAAAA after routing Langston Hughes 10-0 on Tuesday.
LACROSSE – NEWNAN LINEUPS DROP GAMES: Traveling to defending Area 1-AAAAA champion Harrison on Thursday, the Newnan girls lacrosse team grabbed an early 2-1 lead before watching the Lady Hoyas gain control with seven unanswered goals en route to a 16-8 victory over the Lady Cougars.
Seniors Sydney Garmany and Gaby Busby scored a minute apart to give Newnan an early lead just over three minutes into the game before Merrick Laughridge scored the second of her five goals in the first half while adding three assists.
Newnan tried to cut into a 9-3 halftime deficit. Goals by Garmany and Savannah Ohliger pulled the Lady Cougars to within 10-5 and Sable Hawkins added the first of her pair in the second half to stay within five goals with 20 minutes left.
Ohliger and Busby each finished with two goals and Busby had a team-high six groundballs.
Garmany led Newnan with three points in the loss.
On Wednesday night, a short-handed Cougars team dropped a 6-3 decision at Woodward Academy despite getting a pair of goals from senior Drew Winslett in a game that went to halftime tied at 1-1.
Despite firing 30 shots on goal for the game, Newnan didn't have an answer for the War Eagles after the break. Woodward outscored Newnan 3-1 in the final period to hang on for the win.
Winslett kept it deadlocked with his final goal off a pass from senior teammate Davis Ozier with 1:18 left in the third period.
Cougar sophomore J.T. Leake added an unassisted goal to pull back within a 5-3 deficit with 9:32 to play.
Sophomore Jordan Surrett finished with 11 saves in goal for Newnan. Sophomore defenseman Mike McMahon finished with a team-high 10 groundballs.
GOLF – TRINITY CHRISTIAN OPENS SEASON WITH WIN: Trinity Christian successfully opened its golf season with a 184-260 win over Furtah Prep at Canongate-on-White Oak.
A pair of seniors led the way for the Lions as Tyler Anderson shot 40 and Savannah Humber added a nine-hole round of 47.
