All-Coweta team: Sandland, Powell named players of the year

By Stuart Crosby

The Newnan Times-Herald

The 2009 high school soccer season ended with the East Coweta Indians one game short of a AAAAA boys title, and with The Heritage School Lady Hawks one game short of a GISA AA title.

The Indians finished their season 15-5.

East Coweta Head Coach Todd Beldon is the coach of the year for the All-Coweta boys soccer team, selected by The Times-Herald sports department.

East Coweta's Alex Sandland is the 2009 player of the year.

Sandland led the Indians in scoring with 24 goals and six assists.

Beldon and Sandland are joined on the squad by six other members of the Indians. To make a return to the state playoffs this year, the Newnan Cougars relied on the scoring of Sam Taylor and on the emergence of young goalie Patrick McAlpin. Both Newnan players made this year's all-county team along with Northgate's T.J. Healy, Casey Vaughn and Wesley Lutz.

Other East Coweta players named are Trevor Byrum, Ryan Danford, Corey Geary, Kevin Goerner and Michael Rabun.

For the girls, the 2009 season was very good to The Heritage School Lady Hawks and Emily Gray Powell.

Powell led the region in goals, scoring 41 in the regular season and adding seven more in the playoffs. Her Lady Hawks ended the season 18-1, falling for the first time this season in the state championship.

Powell is the 2009 Coweta County player of the year.

Because Northgate's Lady Vikings made the state playoffs for the first time in five years and ended the season with a 17-3 record, head coach Mike Berry has been selected as the coach of the year for girls soccer.

Berry leads a contingent of five other Northgate representatives, as defenders Devin Frye, Becky Clay, Lindsay Caldwell along with midfielder Sarah Daane and forward Katie Taylor join the team this year.

Powell is not alone in representing Heritage School. Midfielders Layna Carnicom, Katie Kaufmann and Allie Gruber, as well as forward Kathryn Martin and defender Claudia Bost, were named to the team.

The Lady Indians, who will be coached by boys assistant Chris Luppens in 2010, had four representatives to make the team -- Andye Dawson, Chelsa Hise, Heather Pierce and Amber Wright.

Not this year, that honor belongs to Mr. Skinner. Yeah this loss will take years to recover from, all those wins, gone. All those d-1 players, gone. This isnt a academic post kids

Agree with Parent. The drastic change in the program will show next season. Berry brought structure to the program. And, yes, he was the BEST teacher at Ng. This loss will take years for Ng to recover from.

Congratulations to the NG players! FYI, not only was Coach Berry named coach of the year, he has was also named teacher of the year (which is the not the first time). He brought a strong knowledge, both academic and athletic, to NG and unless you had the privilege of knowing him as a friend or coworker, how could you even have an opinion? He expected a lot from his players both on and off the field, a true mentor.

Congratulations to all the NG players who made the All-County. The boys were able to win the County Championship and the girls had a great season being ranked in to top ten all year. Coach Berry deserved to be coach of the year...if you disagree, thats your opinion. No need to bash the man. NG is losing a great coach and teacher. And correction...it's Devon Fry.

Congrats to all the players, but I have to strongly disagree with the girl's player of year. Powell is a good player, but she is able to score so much because of weak competition. If she was playing for any one of the county teams she would be good but certainly not stand out as much. This was not fair to the great players from the county teams who play stiff competition every game. Many were seniors who received college scholarships.

Couldnt win when it counted. And dont forget about the boys. How many times did they win against the "Big 3"? How many times did they make the playoffs? He had the girls FOR TWO YEARS AND ONE PLAYOFF APPEARANCE (get your facts straight), and they were already good before that. If making the playoffs is good for you then so be it. But I like diamonds and championships

a winner. His only year as the Girls coach, they went 17-3, and made State out of the hardest soccer region in Georgia for the first time in 5 years. Steve - get over it.

No way Powell is POY. They play against 7th & 8th graders on many varsity opponents. A routine schedule against Newnan, EC and Ngate and 41 goals would not happen. If she played for them, she would not score but a handful. Do not equate the competition of Heritage to any other county school. You saw what happened when the played some competition.
