With a little more than a week to go in the regular season, local high school basketball teams are all hoping to head into their region tournaments with at least a bit of momentum.
It starts tonight with a full slate of region games.
The Newnan Cougars are the only local GHSA team in town, while Heritage School and Trinity Christian face region opponents in GISA action.
Trinity Christian was the lone varsity team in action inside the county on Thursday. The Lions gained some confidence with a 47-39 victory over Oak Mountain at home in a balanced effort for head coach Anthony Lamb.
Trinity Christian's boys stepped up its defense in the second quarter, holding Oak Mountain to just two points to take a 18-13 lead into halftime. The Lions (3-13) outscored the Warriors 18-11 in the final period after OMA closed to within one.
Luke Hammond led Trinity Christian with nine points on three, 3-pointers while Tyler Anderson and Thiago D’Elia each had eight.
Trinity Christian returns to Region 1-AAA play tonight at home against Dominion Christian, weather permitting.
The Lady Lions (4-11) fell 32-30 to Oak Mountain despite 13 points from Alex Huber. Ashley Caldwell and Sara Bryan finished with six and five points, respectively, while Skylar Lamb had four.
In a Region 3-AAAAAA game tonight, Newnan faces a rematch against Tri-Cities. The Bulldogs (8-8, 2-2) defeated the Cougars (11-8, 2-3) 59-50 in the first meeting of the season.
Newnan hopes to break a two-game losing streak when it faces the Bulldogs.
Last  weekend, the Bulldogs played two contests against squads in the Inspire MLK Classic during a trip to Florida. Tri-Cities lost two games in the tournament against teams from the Sunshine State by a combined four points, including a  56-54 loss in overtime  against  West Gasden.
Newnan’s girls (1-15, 1-4) hope to add a second region win over the Lady Bulldogs tonight.
Heritage School's teams are back in their old gym for tonight’s game against Loganville Christian. The Hawks come into the game needing a win after falling to Dominion Christian Tuesday. That loss dropped the Hawks (14-3 overall and 4-2) to third in GISA Region 1-AAA.
Heritage School has its work cut out for it today as Loganville brings an undefeated 10-0 record into the contest, including a 5-0 region mark.
The Heritage School girls are 8-6 overall and are in second place in the region with a 3-2 record.
East Coweta tries to get back on track tonight when it takes its teams to Langston Hughes for the second meeting of the year between the two teams. Langston Hughes swept the Indians in the first meeting when the two schools played in Sharpsburg.
Both of East Coweta’s boys and girls teams took losses against Douglas County on Tuesday. The Indians lost 102-71, while the Lady Indians dropped a 63-32 decision.
Langston Hughes enters the game 8-8 overall, but in first place with a 4-1 record in the Region 3-AAAAAA standings.  The Indians are 3-13 overall, but still looking for their first region win of the year.
As long-time East Coweta girls coach Paula Jones heads into her last six regular-season games of her career before retiring, the Lady Indians are trying to end a two-game losing streak. The Lady Indians’ last victory came when they beat rival Newnan 50-40 earlier this month.
At Northgate, both teams are trying to find a way to get back in the win column when they travel to Creekside.
The Lady Vikings are 5-13 overall and 2-9 in Region 4B-AAAAA play. The boys are 5-12 overall and 3-8.
