Friday's Prep Football Picks

From The Newnan Times-Herald Sports Staff
sports@newnan.com Through the first 4 weeks of the season, our overall mark is 15-3 (.833 pct.) after going 4-0 last week.
Here are this week's picks...
Lovejoy (2-1) at East Coweta (1-2): The Georgia High School Football Daily released its list of teams with the toughest schedules this week. We can’t figure out how East Coweta isn’t included. The Indians go from high-powered Sandy Creek to an athletic Lovejoy team primed to go further than last year’s trip to the Class AAAAA quarterfinals. This is what happens when the GHSA forces you to find five non-region opponents. Somewhere down the line, East Coweta will benefit from the competition. Just not tonight on the scoreboard. WILDCATS 21, INDIANS 10.

Northgate (1-2) at Ola (1-2): Two teams enter with similar records, but not through the same paths. The Vikings proved how well they could perform last week after two difficult non-region opponents to open the season while dominating North Clayton. Last season, the Vikings made the same trip to McDonough and put together a 42-point effort. With the Northgate offense beginning to hit its stride and the defense continuing to keep the team in games, there’s plenty of reasons to believe the Vikings are on the right track heading into next week’s Homecoming game. VIKINGS 28, MUSTANGS 6.

Trinity Christian (2-1) at Flint River (2-2): Last year’s game between the two programs, which came on Aug. 19, was a bit deceiving considering the Lions were playing their first 11-man football contest in school history and showed some of the transition by making costly mistakes in a 28-6 loss. This is not that same team, however. So far Flint River had dominated inferior opponents and mightily struggled against two of last year’s playoff lineups in Valwood and The Heritage School. What category Trinity fits into depends on tonight’s execution. If they continue last week’s trends (42 points, 0 allowed, 0 turnovers) they’ll certainly fit into the latter category. LIONS 35, WILDCATS 21.

The Heritage School (3-0) at Dawson Street (1-2): Dawson Street’s lone win came in a one-point victory against a struggling Arlington program that was forced to forfeit its next two and most likely the season. Meanwhile, Candler Rich and company haven’t skipped a beat since losing starting quarterback Joe Bonner to a shoulder injury in the preseason. Having allowed 46, 35 and 47 points the last three games it could be another long, long night for the Wildcats at the hands of Heritage. HAWKS 49, WILDCATS 12.
