By Stuart Crosby

The Times-Herald

Mary Helen McElreath shot a 79 to defeat local golfer Jodie Shepard by one stroke Thursday in the Championship Flight of the LGA Ladies Invitational Tournament at the Newnan Country Club.

Shepard was the winner of the event's championship flight last year.

Marilyn Nolan-Johnson finished third in the flight with an 81. Darlene Werhnyak finished fourth and won the Carolyn Manos Trophy due to her best low net score recorded by a regular golfer at the club.

Liz Butler, the winner of the 2006 tournament, finished in a tie for fifth with a score of 83.

In other tournament flights, Donna Eaton won the first flight after shooting an 80 while June Holder was second with an 82 and Betsy Butler finished in third with Sherry Huchet finishing with the low net score.

Sandy Lee, Jean Davis and Cheryl Drewer all finished with an 89 for a three-way tie in the second flight, but Lee was declared the winner by virtue of having a lower number of putts.

The third flight of the day was won by Crandall Edwards who finished with an 86 followed by Pam Panage who shot a 90 and Betty Rich was third after shooting a 91 while Patty Hudspeth had the low net score of the flight.

Nina Fanning of Newnan was the winner of the fourth flight after shooting a round of 91 while Kathy Cook finished second with a 93 and Pat Brady was third with a 95.

The fifth flight was won by Faye Colwell with an 85, Sissy Smith was second with a 91 and Ernie Hamman finished third after finishing with a 93.

Local golfer Nancy Burks took the sixth flight after shooting a 95 while Dee Dee Baker was second with a score of 98 and Sarah Connors ended the day with a 99.

Other winners in the tournament were Mary Carlson in the seventh flight, Brenda Jordan in the eighth flight, Barbara Nadreu was the winner of the ninth flight, Ruthie Brown won the 10th flight and Kay Butler was victorious in the 11th flight.
