Coaches sometimes wonder how their teams will respond once playoff time arrives.
For Trinity Christian School coach Matt Schock, it didn't take long.
Playing crosstown rival Heritage Christian for the second time this season to open the first round of the ICSGA state-playoffs on Friday at East Coweta Middle School, the Lions scored on their first three offensive possessions and ran back a Crusaders interception for a score in a 52-30 victory that was well in hand by halftime.
Trinity Christian scored on three of its first five offensive plays of the game to jump out to a 32-0 first-quarter lead, while advancing to next week's second round with a convincing effort.
"We really came out strong," said Schock. "We ran the ball real well and got to play a lot of our second team guys by the second quarter."
The Lions now advance to host North Region rival Grace Baptist, which finished third behind Trinity Christian in the division.
"We kind of expected that," said Schock. "We knew our region was very strong."
Andrew Dennis continued to pace the Lions offense with two touchdowns, but Trinity Christian equally welcomed back senior tailback Clint Karr on Friday after being out for most of the season with a broken hand. Karr picked up right where he left off, scoring two times as Trinity led 46-6 by halftime.
Senior Camryn Clark picked off a Heritage Christian pass and ran it back for a score in between the Lions first-two offensive touchdowns for a 21-0 lead. Clark started at quarterback before giving way to freshman Connor Adams.
Another ninth grader, Timothy White, added a pair of touchdowns for Trinity, which improved its record to 8-1 this season.
