MS Basketball: Lee teams finish as No. 1 seeds

By Chris Goltermann

The Newnan Times-Herald

Both Lee Middle School basketball teams will enter next week's Coweta County Middle School Athletic League playoffs as the tournament's No. 1 seeds.

Coach Jared Waggoner's Lady Timberwolves defeated East Coweta Middle 34-14 to clinch first place among girls teams on Thursday with a 9-1 record. The three-time defending CCMSAL champions earn a first-round bye and will face the winner of Monday's first-round game between Arnall (4-6) and Evans (2-8). The other first-round girls game pits No. 3 seed Madras (7-3) against winless East Coweta.

Smokey Road's girls, who finished 8-2, also earn a first-round bye. The Lady Wildcats finished the regular season with a 25-15 win over Evans.

The CCMSAL tournament, hosted by East Coweta Middle, begins Monday with girls first-round games. Boys action opens Tuesday before respective semifinal rounds on Wednesday and Thursday. First games start at 5 p.m.

Championship games on Friday begin with the girls title at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for all games are $5.

The Timberwolves, coached by Pat Harris, put the finishing touches on an undefeated regular season with a 60-23 win over East Coweta.

Evans grabbed the other first-round bye with a 43-39 victory over Smokey Road's boys in a battle for second place. Jannson Williams led Evans (8-2) with 14 points.

Last year, Madras' boys made an improbable run through the tournament as a No. 6 seed to win the CCMSAL title, despite finishing the regular season at 1-9.

Tuesday's first-round boys games feature No. 3 Smokey Road playing sixth-seeded East Coweta and No. 4 seeded Arnall against No. 5 Madras.
