Lady Indians top Whitewater

By Stuart Crosby

The Newnan Times-Herald

FAYETTEVILLE -- East Coweta's girls basektball team stayed busy on Saturday, beating Whitewater 34-28 in a non-region doubleheader on the road.

The 28 points allowed by the Indians to the Wildcats matched the season low that was set on January 23 in a 54-28 win against the Starr's Mill Lady Panthers.

Angelica Zackery and Tryesa McKenzie converted key free throws in the fourth quarter to help ice the victory, as East Coweta outscored Whitewater 11-8 in the final eight minutes after overtaking the lead in the third quarter.

A nip-and-tuck game saw Whitewater grab a 12-11 halftime lead, only to see East Coweta battle back to grab a three-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Zackery led the Lady Indians with nine points, McKenzie had eight while Brittney Menefee, Danielle Godfrey and Zanna Zackery each scored five points.

Whitewater's boys beat the Indians 63-57 with Indians assistant Andy Washington running the team in place of head coach Ronnie Vandiver, who was serving the first of a two-game suspension after being ejected in Friday night's loss to the Tigers.

East Coweta wraps up Region 4-AAAAA play at Westlake Tuesday and at home Friday against Newnan to close the regular season.

Meanwhile, the Northgate Lady Vikings dropped to 5-6 in Region 5-AAAA play after a 35-33 loss Friday at McIntosh. Northgate hosts Villa Rica Tuesday in games postponed from a winter storm on Jan. 8.

Is it possible to list both the NG boys and girls basketball scores from Saturday? Your article is published on 5/8. Surely there was enough time to get the score from a game played on 5/6. Of course, if it is more of the same.... we get it.
