Lady Hawks rout Griffin on Senior Night

By Chris Goltermann

The Newnan Times-Herald

After a hard-fought loss the night before, The Heritage School girls basketball team was able to close out a long final week of the regular season with a 39-26 victory over Griffin Christian on Senior Night.

Lady Hawks senior Katie Kaufmann scored 13 points to lead Heritage's three upperclassmen playing their final home games of respective careers. Maggie Ginn added five points and Nicole Young had two.

Meanwhile, the Heritage boys simply ran out of gas coming off what Hawks head coach Philip Miles called the best game of the season on Thursday.

Playing their third game of the week on Friday against Griffin Christian, though, the Hawks had no answer for a second-period surge from the Crusaders, losing 64-43.

Both Heritage teams will open the GISA Region 4-AA tournament on Monday at LaGrange Academy, with the girls playing at 7 p.m. and the boys following against Heirway Christian at 8:30 p.m.

The Lady Hawks were able to snap a four-game losing streak just in time for the region playoffs with Friday's win. Heritage jumped out to an 11-2 lead and outscored the Lady Crusaders 10-0 in the second quarter to pull away for good in a rout.

Heritage led 32-10 heading into the final period behind Emily Gray Powell's 15 points. Isabel Dennis and Julie Thames each had two points for the Lady Hawks, who were without leading rebounder Lydia Powell, sitting out with a sore knee.

In the boys game, seniors Seth Bonner, Garrett Okun and Cliff Cranford all contributed points as the Hawks stayed within 15-8 deficit after one quarter. But Griffin pushed its lead to 16 at halftime.

Kyle Kimsey and Bonner each had 16 points to lead Heritage. Okun added five and Cranford four.
