The Newnan Times-Herald

Michael Hicks held off Brett Veasey by one stroke over two rounds to win Newnan Country Club's annual W. Wilkins Kirby Invitational last weekend.

Hicks was among 87 golfers among eight flights at the Invitational, which has been played since 1922. Competing among four Championship divisions, Hicks shot 72 over both rounds for a 144. Veasey matched Hicks first-round score and fired a 73 on Sunday to finish just behind in second place with a total of 145.

Cartwright rallied from five-strokes down for a 71 on Sunday, but couldn't make up the difference to finish third with a two-day total of 148. Chad Griffith was fourth with a 149, followed by Barry Reading (150) and Jonathan Lynch (151) in fifth and sixth-place overall, respectively.

Players in the Championship flights played the blue tees both days. The other four flights played the course's white tees.

ATLANTA JUNIOR GOLF GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP: Cody Sapp of Sharpsburg fired five birdies on Tuesday in the 15-18 Open boys division during an opening round effort of 2-over 74 in the first round of the Atlanta Junior Golf's Open Grand Championship at Callaway Gardens' Mountain View Course.

Sapp opens the second of three rounds in a three-way tie for second place, just one stroke behind Matthew McKagan of Powder Springs. The 16-year-old McKagan posted three birdies and four bogeys to finish at 1-over 73 among a field of 51 golfers.

Sapp, who enters today tied with Justin Stuart and Shea Sylvester, had three straight birdies on the back nine starting with the par-5, 11th hole. He ended the back nine with consecutive bogeys on 16 and 17, however, to allow McKagan to stay ahead.

Michael Smith of Newnan enters today tied for 25th place following a round of 84 on Tuesday that included birdies on hole No.s 7 and 18. Chris Avery of Newnan is tied for 39th place.

Three other local youth golfers participated in the AJG's Junior Club Level Championships, held July 22-23 at City Club of Marietta. Preston Wise of Newnan competed in the 9-hole Boys 12-under division, tying for 25th with a 53. Daniel Rampersad of Peachtree City finished tied for 39th.

Nick Rampersad of Peachtree City finished tied for 13th in the 9-hole Boys 13-over division.
