Basketball teams from The Heritage School each fought valiantly in GISA Region 4-AA play on Tuesday. But neither one was able to leave LaGrange Academy with a victory in hand.
The Hawks fought back from a 12-point deficit after one period to take a lead midway through the third, only to see LaGrange connect on 14 of its 44 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter during a 63-48 loss.
A region doubleheader began with the Lady Hawks unable to find an answer in the fourth quarter against LaGrange Academy's girls in a 51-40 loss.
In the boys contest, the Warriors didn't hit a field goal in the fourth quarter, relying solely on points from the line to pull away. For the game, LaGrange hit 32 of 44 free throws while Heritage was 3-for-6 for the game.
"We played hard again," said Heritage boys coach Philip Miles, whose team was coming off a 56-41 win over Flint River on Friday. "That's a good team (in LaGrange). They have a good chance to be an Elite Eight or Final Four type of team. For us to be up two points midway through the third, I thought we gave ourselves a chance."
Despite the Warriors' 44 free throws only Seth Bonner managed to foul out for Heritage, which was led by Kyle Kimsey's 22 points. After trailing 21-9 after one quarter, Kimsey helped the Hawks pull within two at halftime.
LaGrange's lead was seven points to begin the fourth quarter before pulling away.
Meanwhile, Lady Hawks head coach Simone Dupree again felt her team gave a strong effort, coming off Friday's disappointing loss to Flint River where the team led through three quarters. On Tuesday the teams went shot-for-shot while tied at the end of the first period (10-10) and halftime (23-23).
It wasn't until after LaGrange grabbed a 35-30 lead heading into the final period that the Lady Warriors were able to use a pair of 3-pointers to slowly pull away.
"It was a much closer game than it looks on paper," said Dupree. "I just can't explain it. I'm just hoping we can pull out of this by next week."
Emily Gray Powell both teams with a game-high 16 points for Heritage. Isabel Dennis added 10 points and Lydia Powell finished with eight to go with a team-high 10 rebounds.
Dagny Langford led LaGrange Academy with 14 points.
The Heritage School continues a busy week with a trip to Flint River on Thursday with boys teams playing for the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in next week's Region 4-AA tournament. Heritage hosts Griffin Christian on Friday.
