The Heritage School’s tennis teams swept GISA Class AA state tennis titles on Wednesday at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta. The Lady Hawks won their sixth championship since 2003, while the Hawks captured their fourth after finishing as runners up last season.

By CHRIS GOLTERMANN cgoltermann@newnan.com The Heritage School may have another tennis dynasty on its hands. Two of them, exactly. The school’s varsity boys and girls lineups each won back-to-back matches to sweep GISA Class AA titles at Wednesday’s team tennis tournaments at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta.
The Lady Hawks won their sixth state championship since 2003, getting a final three-set victory from its No. 1 doubles team of juniors Amanda Frederking and Ellie Crosby to defeat Monsignor Donovan 3-2 for the girls title. Frederking and Crosby won the final set 6-4 for the clincher. “It was a long, drawn out match,” said Heritage coach Gail Jones, who has been a part of all six girls titles. “We have seven juniors between the teams, so I hope there might be more of this to come next year.” GISA individual singles champion Isabel Dennis continued her unbeaten streak to give Heritage one of its three victories. The Hawks, meanwhile, shut out Frederica in the Class AA boys finals. Individual state champion Joe Sterrey was one of three Heritage singles winners that clinched the 3-0 victory. After being paired together for the individual tournament, Alex Carter and Grayson Parker won at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to clinch the Hawks’ fourth team title since 2003.
