The Heritage School scored five unanswered touchdowns, four from Candler Rich, as the Hawks' middle school team stayed unbeaten with a 35-14 win over Flint River Academy on Thursday.
Heritage coach Bud Ramsey's team is now 5-0, heading into this Thursday's game at home against Strong Rock Christian.
The Hawks opened the game by forcing a Flint River fumble that was recovered by Evan Loughlin at midfield. Heritage drove the ball to the Flint River 15 before Rich caught a pass from quarterback Joe Bonner for a 6-0 lead.
The Wildcats fumbled the ball back to Heritage as defender Elliott Smith recovered. Near midfield, Bonner and Rich hooked up a again for a 50-yard catch and run to make it 12-0 before Grayson Parker followed with a two-point run.
Teams traded possessions for most of the second quarter, as neither team looked to be able to break through. But with just 30 seconds left in the first half, Bonner caught Flint River sleeping on a long pass play, again to Rich, over the middle for a touchdown. Loughlin's ensuing extra point upped Heritage's lead to 21-0 at halftime.
The Hawks fumbled the ball to open the second half, but managed to hold Flint River to a punt with help from a sack by Smith. Taking over at its own 27, Heritage had a 62-yard touchdown run by Rich called back on a block-in-the-back penalty. Three plays later, however, the Hawks dug deep into the playbook for a successful hook-and-ladder passing play from Bonner to Patrick McGee, who quickly lateraled back to Rich for a 68-yard score. Loughlin's kick upped the Hawks lead to 28-0.
Smith caused a fumble to start Heritage's final touchdown drive. On fourth-and-1 from the Flint River 22-yard line, Bonner hit Garrett Jones with a touchdown pass to make it 35-0 after Loughlin's PAT.
Flint River finally got on the scoreboard with less than three minutes to play on a kickoff return and added their final touchdown just before time expired with the outcome already in hand.
