Hawks get big win at Flint River

By Chris Goltermann

The Newnan Times-Herald

For most of this basketball season, The Heritage School's boys basketball team has struggled while its girls held tough during the GISA Region 4-AA season.

On Thursday, though, they switched places for the moment.

Traveling to Flint River, the Hawks clinched the No. 4 seed from their subregion in next week's region tournament with a convincing 61-48 win over the Wildcats, less than a week after losing by 15 points to Flint River at home.

Kyle Kimsey had 22 points and more importantly, Cliff Cranford chimed in with an impressive secondary effort. Cranford scored 17 points and added more than 10 rebounds, which may have made the difference in jumping out to an 11-point lead after three quarters.

"We did a better job rebounding (Thursday) than we have all year," said Heritage boys coach Philip Miles. "This is our best game all year. I hope we can keep it going."

Up 27-25 at halftime, Heritage's triangle-and-two defense was able to force turnovers and the rebounding advantage put the Hawks (4-13, 3-10) ahead nine to open the final period against host Flint River (8-13, 2-10).

Heritage wraps up the regular season tonight at home against Griffin Christian before heading into the Region 4-AA tournament on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Lady Hawks put together another valiant effort, but lost their fourth straight game, three of which haven't been decided until late.

Coming off a heartbreaking four-point loss to Flint River in last Friday's "Pink-Out" game, Heritage's girls suffered a blow before the opening tip, losing Lydia Powell to a knee injury.

Despite strong efforts from senior Katie Kaufmann and sophomore Megan Gruber in her absence, the Lady Hawks couldn't rally from a five-point deficit after three quarters, falling 47-39.

Emily Gray Powell led the Lady Hawks (8-9, 4-8) with 14 points and Kaufmann added 12 in her "best game of the season." Gruber tallied all seven of her points off the bench in the fourth quarter as Heritage trailed 23-17 at halftime and 36-31 to begin the fourth quarter.

Eighth grader Megan Gregg had a game-high 16 for Flint River (18-4, 8-4) and Tyler Lohman added 12.
