Football pickers winding down ‘09 season

One hundred picks in and counting.

That’s where The Times-Herald’s football prognositcators are heading into Week 11 of the 2009 season. It’s meant, however, saying goodbye to two of the county’s prep teams — Northgate and The Heritage School — as two others – East Coweta and Newnan – enter the GHSA state playoffs.

Last week, The Times-Herald went 7-3 to improve its record to 70-30 (.700) for the season.

Here’s this week’s picks:

HIGH SCHOOL

Valdosta (7-3) at Newnan (10-0)... Despite all of their success, the Cougars have the toughest first-round matchup for any of the eight region champions in Class AAAAA. Newnan, though, might want to thank East Coweta for giving them a playoff tune-up and a playoff-like atmosphere one week early. It’ll pay off tonight against a solid Valdosta lineup. COUGARS 28, WILDCATS 14.

East Coweta at Lowndes... The Indians are essentially playing a No. 1 seed in the first round of the state playoffs and a title contender in many eyes. They’ll have to show the same amount of confidence as they did last week against No. 4-ranked Newnan. But unless they can create holes for Tay Willis among a massive Viking defensive front, breaks may be hard to come by. VIKINGS 34, INDIANS 13.

COLLEGE

Auburn at Georgia... The Tigers are playing a little better than the Bulldogs this time of year, but give the nod barely to Georgia. UGA, 24-23.

Georgia Tech at Duke.... It wasn’t too long ago that the Jackets got embarrassed at Durham. Not this time. GEORGIA TECH, 38-21.

Florida at South Carolina.... Does the ol’ ball coach have something up his sleeve for the Gators? Don’t think so. FLORIDA, 27-13.

Tennessee at Ole Miss.... Can you believe the Vols are actually making a run at a New Year’s Day Bowl. Can the Rebels stop them? Yes. OLE MISS, 28-21.

West Virginia at Cincinnati.... The No. 5 Bearcats have been the ‘beast’ of the Big East so far. It ends this week. WEST VIRGINIA, 35-34.

Notre Dame at Pittsburgh.... Maybe Charlie Weis sticks around for another year after this upset of No. 8 Pitt. NOTRE DAME, 27-24.

PRO

Atlanta at Carolina.... The Falcons need to continue their push for a Wild Card playoff berth. ATLANTA, 30-27.

New England at Indianapolis.... Probably a preview of the AFC Championship game. NEW ENGLAND, 20-17.

Newnan 21 Valdosta 14 Lowndes 28 EC 24 although I hope they will pull it out and prove me wrong. Let's take care business Cats and Indians and represent Coweta County. Good luck tonight.
