Football Pickers finish 8-2 last week

A pair of stunners prevented a perfect week of picks from The Times-Herald football prognosticators.

Clemson and McIntosh High provided the only two misses in an 8-2 effort, improving the paper’s overall picks mark to 55-25 (.687) heading into this weekend’s game.

Here’s how we see this week’s games.

HIGH SCHOOL

Mundy’s Mill (1-7, 1-6) at Newnan (8-0, 7-0)... There’s too much at stake for the Cougars, who could wrap up a Region 4-AAAAA title — their fourth straight — with a victory Friday. Newnan’s too deep and too talented to let this one get away from them. COUGARS 42, TiGERS 0.

Riverdale (2-6, 2-5) at East Coweta (6-2, 5-2)... If this had been a different year, the Indians might be looking ahead to next week’s trip to Newnan. But sitting alone in third place in Region 4-AAAAA, and a shot at second still alive, a win Friday means way too much. INDIANS 35, RAIDERS 12.

Sandy Creek (7-1, 4-0) at Northgate (3-5, 2-2)... Despite last week’s disappointing loss at McIntosh, in all three of its home games, Northgate has held leads and more importantly forced their opponents’ hand. The Vikings should have enough heart and poise to stick with a Patriots team that doesn’t have nearly as much to play for, having already clinched the subregion. But that still might not be enough ... PATRIOTS 21, VIKINGS 14.

Harvester Christian (2-7, 1-3) at Heritage School (5-4, 2-2)... After their last two losses, Heritage School put together solid efforts to get back on track. Friday's matchup will be a bigger challenge though. But having won three games by five points-or-less will give Heritage’s Hawks a definite edge. OUR HAWKS 27, THEIR HAWKS 21.

COLLEGE

Georgia vs. Florida (Jacksonville)...  On the surface, it appears many of the UGA fans are more concerned about QB Tim Tebow breaking Herschel Walker’s SEC TD record than winning the game.  Don’t worry, Tebow and the Gators will do both.  FLORIDA, 28-14.

Georgia Tech at Vanderbilt...  The Yellow Jackets could well be on their way to a perfect 3-0 record against SEC competition this year.  GEORGIA TECH, 30-10.

Ole Miss at Auburn... The Tigers have lost their rhythm, while the Rebels have found theirs.  OLE MISS, 21-13.

Southern Cal at Oregon...  Too bad for the Ducks that the Trojans have already lost their annual one game in Pac-10 play.  USC, 31-28.

PRO

Atlanta at New Orleans...  If the Falcons thought that Jerry Jones' Stadium was rowdy last week, just wait until they get in the Superdome Monday night.  NEW ORLEANS, 35-21.

Minnesota at Green Bay...  Wonder what kind of reception QB Brett Favre will get at Lambeau Field... especially after a Vikings win.  MINNESOTA, 24-21.
