PEACHTREE CITY-East Coweta head basketball coach Ronnie Vandiver acquired a few more gray hairs Saturday night. His Indians needed overtime in order to defeat the McIntosh Chiefs 86-79 in their regular season opener.
"I wasn't sure about going into overtime," Vandiver said. "We weren't playing well late and there was a lot going against us. I was also surprised with McIntosh because they were a little quicker than I thought."
The game was tied at 74-74 at the end of regulation. The Indians scored on a basket and free throw by Madarius Gibbs but an ill-advised foul allowed the Chiefs three free throws which tied the game at 77-77. A free throw by Brandon Farmer started a 7-0 run that gave them the win.
The game started with the Indians down 1-0 when a technical foul was called. A player was spotted trying to dunk during warm-ups. Trailing 3-0, the Indians went on an 11-2 run to take the lead and had a 17-11 lead with 4:00 remaining. Then the Chiefs went on a 9-3 run to tie the game at 20-20. A basket by Houston gave the Indians a 22-20 lead going into the second period.
The second period saw a tight game, but a late run by the Indians gave them a 40-32 lead going to the locker room. Joshua Houston and Brandon Farmer combined for 16 points.
The Chiefs rallied in the third period and took a 54-53 lead into the final period. But the Indians outscored them 21-20 to force overtime.
Houston led the Indians with 30 points, Farmer followed with 24 and Gibbs contributed 14 points.
The win gave the Indians a split. The Lady Indians could not overcome a first period hole and dropped a 49-37 contest in their opener.
"We didn't start the game very well," Lady Indians head coach Paula Jones said. "Our effort was good but we didn't capitalize on turnovers sent them to the line too often."
Casey Seldon tied the game at 2-2 for EC with 6:19 remaining in the first period. McIntosh went on an 11-0 run through the balance of the stanza as the Lady Indians committed several turnovers that led to points for the Lady Chiefs. A free throw by Angelica Zackery in the opening moments of the second period ended the run. After a McIntosh basket with 6:25 remaining, EC went on a 7-0 run that cut the margin to 15-10 with 2:28 remaining in the half.
However, the Lady Chiefs came back with 7-4 finish including a three-pointer at buzzer by Laura Higgason to take 22-14 lead to the locker room.
The Lady Indians made a run in the third period that cut the margin to 28-24 with three minutes remaining but the Lady Chiefs took a 34-24 lead at the end of the period.
In the fourth period, the Lady Indians had one more rally. They trailed by 41-37 with 1:42 remaining but the Lady Chiefs finished the game with an 8-0 run.
Tryesa McKenzie led the Lady Indians with 10 points, Zackery finished with seven while Seldon, Brittney Sinkfield and Brittany Menefee each had six points.
