Detmer clinches Mullins Cup

By Tony Jones

The Times-Herald

Local golfer Wyatt Detmer didn't need a prominent showing on Tuesday afternoon in the final stop of the Georgia PGA Senior Division Tour held at Little Ocmulgee Wallace Adams Golf Course in McRae.

Detmer had already clinched the Mullins Cup, given annually to the top Georgia Senior in the points standings. The award also signifies Detmer as the Georgia Senior Division Player of the Year.

The Orchard Hills head pro and teammate Jim Reeves opened the two-day Senior-Junior Championship on Monday with a four-under scramble score of 68.

They returned to the course on Tuesday to play in a Four-Ball format, shooting three-under 69. The local duo tied for seventh.

The Senior-Junior Championship is slightly misleading. Teams consist of one senior golfer and one who is younger than age 50.

The Orchard Hills veteran discussed the event. "This is a fun year-end tournament. I felt like we hit the ball well, we just struggled to make putts on the Bermuda greens," explained Detmer.

Coweta golfers generally play Bent greens. "The longest putt we made on Monday was probably no more than 20 feet. We didn't make one that long today," admitted Detmer.

Cold and high winds did make scoring challenging. The two played the par 5s to a total of one-over on Tuesday. "Club selection became tricky. We were forced at times to hit two clubs difference," said the golfer.

Detmer built a huge advantage in the Mulllins Cup standings with his outings in Waycross, Albany, Dalton, and Jekyll Isand.

Lonnie Reece of Ellijay finished second and Mike Schlueter of Douglasville was third. Ted Meier of Newnan Country Club came in sixth and Newnan Country Club head pro Louis McHughes was 33rd.

McHughes finished 12th in 2007, followed by Meier (13th) and Detmer (14th). Meier and Detmer will be part of the Georgia professional team that faces the top Georgia Amateurs in the Georgia Senior Cup, held Dec 1-2 at Barnsley Gardens.

Rocky Costa of Alpharetta is currently the leader on the amateur side. Canongate-on-White Oak golfer David Nell sits comfortably in seventh and should be a part of the amateur squad that competes next month at Barnsley Gardens.
