West Georgia entered its annual football meeting on Thursday night at home with Valdosta State with something its program hasn't seen in over two seasons.
Namely a victory.
And while asking for a second-straight win on Thursday night at home over the rival Blazers might have been much, the Wolves had to feel a whole lot better after snapping a 21-game losing streak last Saturday dating back to the 2007 season with a 10-9 comeback victory over West Alabama.
Former East Coweta High standout Brandon Behenna was at the heart of it.
Behenna, a sophomore who transferred to the Division II school in Carrollton this season, came off the bench to spark West Georgia's offense last week, completing 10 of 16 passes for 96 yards and a 15-yard touchdown pass that provided the eventual game-winner in the third quarter.
"I'm really happy for these guys," Behenna told the Times-Georgian newspaper in Carrollton. "I just got here this year and I could really feel their pain. It's just tough. ... Win or lose, we want our respect back. And I think we're on that way. I'm glad we got it off our back now."
West Georgia, under second year head coach Daryl Dickey, a former Florida State assistant and head coach at Division II Presbyterian College, is looking to return to prominence in the Gulf South Conference where the program won back-to-back Gulf South Conference titles in 1997 and 1998 under head coaches Charlie Fisher and Glenn Spencer. Fisher is currently an offensive assistant at Vanderbilt and Spencer is a defensive assistant at Oklahoma State.
Behenna was one of three quarterbacks used by Dickey this season and shared the backup job with Kyle Padgett before he was injured earlier this season.
Two weeks ago, Behenna, who played for the Newnan Braves summer-league baseball team coached by his father and former Atlanta reliever, Rick Behenna, both ran and threw for a touchdown in a loss at Arkansas Tech on Oct. 17.
In eight games this season, Behenna has thrown for 441 yards and two touchdowns while completing 51.8-percent of his throws. He had two interceptions heading into Thursday night's game at University Field and had started one game.
MORRIS MATCHES CAREER-HIGH IN TACKLES: Air Force junior linebacker Andre Morris matched his career-high with nine tackles in last week's overtime loss to Utah, 23-16. The former Northgate High standout also had a sack and a fumble recovery.
Morris, who was named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 21 following a victory over New Mexico, is now third among Air Force defenders in tackles. He recorded his first interception of the season against TCU and missed one game this season due to injury.
