Arlington Christian duo sign

A pair of girls sports standouts at Arlington Christian School signed national letters-of-intent last week.

Senior basketball guard Meghan Downes, daughter of David and Patti Downes of Newnan, signed with the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Coached at Arlington by former UGA standout Lady Grooms, Meghan played on the Georgia Nike Elite team in the AAU Junior Showcase at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, at the Battle on the Bayou, and in Augusta at the Elite 24 Summer Jam and the Nike Nationals.

A three-sport athlete, Downes was a state champion long jumper last year. Last month, Downes and teammate Danielle Swygert were members of Arlington Christian's state champion softball team and both selected to GISA All-Region and All-State teams.

Swygert, daughter of Ken and Stacy Swygert of Sharpsburg, signed a letter of intent to play softball at Division II Anderson (S.C.) University.

This year, Danielle batted 525 with 47 RBI's to helped power Arlington to a Class AA state title led by coach David Jenkins, who has seen 26 players move on to play in college. Swygert also plays on the Georgia Elite Gold travel team which is coached by former two-time All-American Sheita Rogers.

"Danielle will fit with our mission," said Anderson head Coach Tommy Hewitt. "It's a little old-school, but our motto is we will not allow anyone to outwork us. We believe hard work and dedication will pay off in softball and in life,"

SCHULTZ SIGNS WITH COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON: Newnan native Emily Schultz, a senior four-year letter winner for St. Pius X's varsity volleyball team signed a national letter of intent last week to play at The College of Charleston.

Schultz was named Area 1-AAA Player of the Year and was an All-State selection by the Georgia Volleyball Coaches Association while helping lead St. Pius to a 36-15 record and a trip to the Class AAA Final Four. She was also selected as a senior All-Star by the GVBCA this year and was a state finisher in the high jump last spring in track.

She is the daughter of Dr. Jeffery and Sharon Schultz of Newnan.

YOUTH FOOTBALL SUPER BOWLS AHEAD ON MONDAY: The Coweta Recreation Department will crown its 9-10 year-old age-division champions on Monday night at the recreation complex on Hospital Road.

Second-place teams will open Monday's schedule, with the 3-1 Chargers from the North Division facing the 3-1 Falcons from the South at 6 p.m. That will be followed by the championship game at 7:15 p.m., between the North Division champion Dolphins (4-0) and the South winners, the Patriots (4-0).

LOCAL GOLFERS EXCEL AT GSGA FOUR-BALL: Jim Duncan and Richard Emery of Newnan finished fourth in the First Flight of the GSGA Senior Four Ball Tournament held Nov. 11-13 at Okefenokee Country Club, teaming for a 212 stroke total at 4-under par.

Three local tandems played in the Championship Flight, led by Bruce Connors of Sharpsburg and Rob Lauer of Newnan. The pair finished tied for 18th place at 2-under.

Jake Shirley of Newnan and Larry Hines of Sharpsburg were 34th at a 2-over 218 while a team of Curtis Wagner of Peachtree City and Mike Keeble of Newnan were 35th, one stroke behind Shirley and Hines.

Brent Harmon and Royce LeVaughn of Newnan finished tied for sixth in the Fourth Flight.

SCHULTZE NAMED TO ACC ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: Former East Coweta standout Zach Schultze, a sophomore goalkeeper for Reinhardt's men's soccer team was named to the AAC All-Academic Team this year. To be recognized as a member of the all-academic team, a player must: have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better, be at least a sophomore in academic status and have played in a minimum of 50 percent of the team's competitions.

Schultze had a 2.32 goals-against-average while playing in 15 games this season, with a 2-4-1 record.
