Teams advance after winning sub-state titles

The Newnan Youth Athletic Association’s 6-under baseball All-Stars are hoping to celebrate another title on its home field this week.

The team joined the NYAA’s 8-under Stars in earning USSSA Sub-State coach-pitch tournament championships at the Temple Avenue Recreation Complex on Sunday while also advancing to this weekend’s USSSA All-Star State Tournaments, which start today.

Both lineups went undefeated in sub-state play, each finishing 5-0.

The 6-under stars outscored opponents 100-55 in last week’s tournament, capped off by a 15-7 victory over Tyrone in Sunday’s championship game. Three of their victories came against Tyrone while needing to squeak past the Fayette County All-Stars 22-21 in the winner’s bracket semifinals on Saturday to reach the finals.

The team, led by head coach Stephen Smith and assistants Brandon Phillips, Jeremy Cannon and Jason White, earned a bye in this weekend’s double-elimination state tournament and will face the winner of North Macon-Blue and Fayette County on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

The finals are set for Sunday at 12:30 p.m., with a second game to follow if necessary.

The Senoia All-Stars and a second team representing the NYAA and Centerfield Baseball Academy, led by head coach Walt Sholar, also competed in last weekend’s sub-state event. Both teams won at least one game in the tournament.

The NYAA 8-under All-Stars equally dominated its sub-state tournament at home last week while finishing 5-0 en route to the title following a 13-10 victory over the Hopewell Dirt Dogs out of Milton.

Newnan’s lineup, led by head coach Chris Waddell and assistants David Monk, Previn Blalock, Scott Thigpen and Chris Lynn, held opponents to just over four runs per game. The final was the only contest where the NYAA Stars allowed more than four runs.

The Senoia All-Stars also competed in the tournament while finishing 2-3.

The 8-under state tournament begins today at Coley Park in Hampton, with the NYAA Stars starting play on Saturday while awaiting tonight’s winner between Boundary Waters and Monroe County. The finals are scheduled for Sunday at 12:10 p.m.

Also advancing to state tournaments this weekend from the NYAA were its 12-under All-Stars, led by head coach Lenn Brown and assisted by Bill Young and Randy Darrow.

The 12-under stars qualified by placing second in last weekend’s sub-state tournament in Douglasville with a 3-2 record. It included two wins over the host lineup from Boundary Waters.

The 12-under Senoia All-Stars also competed in the event.

The NYAA team opens double-elimination play in the USSSA All-Star State tournament at Handley Park against tournament host Tyrone at 8:30 p.m.
