Northgate takes 2nd in 1,600 relay

The Northgate 1,600-relay team wasn’t bothered by the rainy conditions Saturday, turning in a second-place performance in the Class AAAAA finals of the Georgia Olympics at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson.

Northgate’s Malik Wade, Adrian Tolbert , Logan Langer and Benton Washington ran the race in a time of 3:24.97.

Effingham County finished just in front of the Vikings, winning the state title in a time of 3:25.63.

At the the Georgia Olympics on Thursday, the Vikings also scored team points with solid performances from pole vaulters Conner Bergh, who finished third with a vault of 13 feet, 6 inches,  and Alex Anderson who placed fourth (12-06).

At the GISA state meet in Albany, The Heritage School’s Ruthie Powell and Josh Mattingly completed a successful weekend.

After winning the 1,600 meters, both Mattingly and Powell capped off the meet at Hugh Mills Stadium with a victory in the 800 meters.

Mattingly raced to a close victory over Mt. de Sales' Zachary Lasater (2:05.09) to win his second event at the state meet.

Powell completed the race in a time of 2:17.16 to beat Deerfield’s Virginia Moore (2:22.28) by nearly five seconds.

In the field events, Chase Parker of Heritage School took fourth place in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 10 inches.

Heritage School's Alexis Pappas (17-05) was second in the long jump.

Trinity Christian senior Mark Collier (104-07) was eighth in the discus throw.
