John Milledge too much for Hawks

by Mitchell Kelley, Special to the Times-Herald

The Heritage Hawks have had a rough start to their 2014-2015 season. After losing a heartbreaker against Flint River last week, they were hoping to even their record Friday night against the John Milledge Christian Trojans.

However, the team couldn’t quite piece things together in a 56-19 loss. The Hawks turned the ball over seven times during the course of the game, all of which led to points for the Trojans. Junior quarterback Peyton Henson, who took over early last week following an injury to quarterback Brad Macke, got the start Friday.

Henson completed 14 out of his 26 passing attempts but the offense as a whole wasn’t able to find ways to score when it had opportunities.

“We were within the 30-yard line seven times,” said Heritage head coach D.J. Clay. “I believe that is definitely something we can fix going into next week’s game at Terrell Academy.”

Senior wide receiver/linebacker Tristan Stoffle had a good night on both sides of the ball for the Hawks. He intercepted Trojans quarterback Colby McCommon at the end of the first half.

Quarterback Peyton Henson and tight end Cole Jones connected on a few occasions in the loss as well. Jones caught a 43-yard strike from Henson to convert on third down late in the first half. Jones showcased his ability to go up over the defender and make tough catches.

After the game, coach Clay said he believed the crowd had a lot to do with how his players kept fighting, adding his is confident his guys will be able to turn it around and play a lot stronger next week on the road against Terrell Academy.

“I believe our guys are invested in what we are trying to do,” Clay said. “We are just going to come back Monday and prepare for the next game.”
