Newnan holds off Pike County 3-1

Newnan’s softball team held off Pike County on the road Wednesday in a 3-1 victory that evened the Lady Cougars’ record to 4-4.

Both teams finished the game with six hits, but Newnan picked up timely hitting from senior starting pitcher Tori Loveless, whose RBI in the sixth drove home Maysen Willard with a go-ahead run.

Williard doubled after Pike County had evened the score at 1-1 before scoring.

Lesley Davis gave Newnan the 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a solo home run to start the scoring.

Pike added its only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when it pushed an unearned run across.

The Lady Cougars added an insurance run when Katelin Richards walked and later scored in the seventh before closing out the win with a wild double-play when catcher Arden Jobe fired to third to nab a runner. A second Pike runner on first was called out for taking off early from the bag on a delayed steal.

Loveless went the distance, striking out two and walking one.

Newnan is off until next Wednesday when it plays a Region 3-AAAAAA contest at Campbell.
