East Coweta's softball team built a big lead Tuesday at Whitewater and then held off a final rally by the Lady Wildcats en route to a 6-4 victory while improving its early-season record to 6-1.

The Lady Indians outhit Whitewater 11-4 and scored in every inning except the second to take 6-0 lead before surrendering all four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Hailey Baswell led East Coweta at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double in the seventh. She also drove in a run.

Atop the order, Shemiah Sanchez, and Madison Carter each had two hits in the Lady Indians No. 1 and No. 2 spots, with Sanchez also posting a double.

Carter, Kelly Lynch and Rachel Vaughn each came through with RBIs.

Morgan Goree struck out nine while pitching six scoreless innings before running into trouble in the seventh. She allowed three hits, but walked six.

Rachel Vaughn came in to close the game with one out in the seventh after Whitewater had closed its deficit to 6-2. Vaughn allowed just one hit and struck out a batter.

East Coweta hosts McIntosh today at 5 p.m.

NEWNAN, NORTHGATE RAINED OUT: The skies over Newnan's softball field gave way to a downpour that washed out Wednesday's scheduled non-region game against Pike County. An earlier JV game had already been delayed by lightning.

Northgate also had its non-region game against Whitewater rained out on Wednesday.

The Lady Vikings host Woodland-Henry in a Region 4-AAAAA game today before hosting Newnan on Monday.
