Lady Cougars win first, EC suffers first loss

A day after being handed a tough-luck one-run loss at home against Starr’s Mill to start the 2014 season, Newnan’s softball team made sure it didn’t meet the same fate during a road trip to LaGrange.

Behind a four-hit performance by senior pitcher Tori Loveless, the Lady Cougars made quick work of their opponents in a 12-0 victory that lasted just five innings.

Loveless didn’t allow a walk in the victory while also going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and 2 RBIs. Battery-mate Arden Jobe, Newnan’s starting senior catcher, also went 3-for-4 in the victory and drove in three runs.

Freshman Sarah Vallery chimed in with two hits and a stolen base for the Lady Cougars (1-1) and sophomore Leslie Davis went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.

Katelin Richardson also added a double to go with 2 RBis for Newnan, which opens its Georgia Dugout Club Tournament schedule on Friday.

WHITEWATER 4, EAST COWETA 2: Lady Indians starting pitcher Rachel Vaughan took a tough-luck loss, allowing four unearned runs while striking out eight Whitewater batters on Wednesday in Fayetteville.

The loss dropped East Coweta’s early-season record to 2-1 heading into Friday’s Georgia Dugout Club tournament game against Alexander.

A pair of Lady Wildcats pitcher held East Coweta to just two hits in the non-region victory.

The Lady Indians committed seven errors, including two in the fifth, to eventually fall behind 4-0 before rallying back.

Olivia Davis opened the top of the sixth with a walk, and one batter later Madison Carter and Katie Lynch posted back-to-back singles off a bunt and a line-drive to center, the latter to put the Lady Indians on the score- board. After Hailey Baswell kept the inning alive with a five-pitch walk, Rachel Vaughn plated another run on a groundout to close the gap to 4-2.

It was the last time East Coweta threatened, however, with Whitewater retiring the side in order in the seventh to close out the win.
