East Coweta off to perfect start with pair of shutouts

So far, East Coweta softball coach Franklin DeLoach must like what he is seeing out of this year's Lady Indians during the first week of the season.

Through two games, the Lady Indians have outscored their two opponents 17-0.

East Coweta opened the season Monday with a 10-0 victory against Northside Columbus on the road in a game called after five innings, and then came back and blank Pike County 7-0 in the home opener Tuesday.

The team continues a busy first week with a trip to Whitewater today for a non-region game. Morgan Goree picked up the win in both contests and now has seven strikeouts through two games with two shutouts.

Senior shortstop Shemiah Sanchez is equally off to a fast start displaying plenty of offense in the first two games. The All-County standout, who has verbally committed to LSU, had two doubles in the victory over Pike, and ripped a homer to help pace the offense in Monday's victory.

Against Northside-Columbus on Monday, the Lady Indians outhit their host 11-3 en route to the victory. Katey Lynch got things started for East Coweta in the top of the first with a two-run homer and DeLoach's squad never looked back.

The Lady Indians finished off the opening victory with eight runs in the top of the third, including Sanchez's three-run homer during a four-hit outing.

Lynch, Hailey Baswell, Sanchez, Qortini Ware and Ashlyn Gunter each doubled for the Lady Indians the season- opening win.

Goree allowed two hits in three innings, striking out four and allowing two hits before giving way to teammate Rachel Vaughn, who gave up just one hit, striking out two.

In Tuesday's home opener, the Lady Indians pushed home four runs in the first inning and cruised from there, also scoring single runs in the second, fifth and sixth.

Goree allowed just five hits against Pike, and also displaying solid control with three strikeouts and one walk.

Seven batters reached base with at least one hit against Pike.

Sanchez, Madison Carter and Katey Lynch the first three batters in the Lady Indians' lineup had two hits each.

Lynch and Jamie Vitale had two RBIs. Baswell and Ware also knocked in runs.
