Smith wins Kirby Invitational at NCC
by Chris Goltermann
The annual Kirby Invitational at Newnan Country Club may be the oldest such tournament in Georgia. But this year's 36-hole event belonged to its most recent generation of competitors.
Trevor Smith and Jordan Henry, two former Newnan High standouts now either excelling or entering the college game, led an impressive field of 135 players by posting the top-two scores led by Smith's three-stroke victory.
Smith, who is entering his junior year for Coastal Georgia's defending NAIA National Championship program, stayed even or under-par in both rounds for a two-day total of 3-over 143 while playing in the Championship A division.
The victory comes after several top efforts at the Kirby Invitational including a third-place effort in 2012. Smith won the Championship B Flight in last year's event with a an 8-over 148 in a tiebreaker.
In all, players were divided between five championship and five f light divisions.
Another former Newnan High standout, Carson Vaughn, opened with an even-70 for a one-stroke lead during Saturday's first round before finishing in a tie for seventh overall with the fourth-best 36-hole total.
Smith, meanwhile, stayed in contention with a 1-over 71 while matching first round efforts of Keith Flemming and Kile Williams before pulling ahead on Sunday.
Henry, who is heading into his freshman season at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, remained steady with consecutive round of 73 to finish 6-over for the tournament in second place behind Smith at 146.
Ridge Purcell, Chase Humber, Brent Reid and 2013 Kirby Invitational champion Bo Burdette each finished one shot behind Henry at 147.
Championship division winners, along with respective scores, also included Barry Reading (B, 150), Eddie Hall (C, 152), Dan McManus (D, 152) and David Whittle (E, 163).
David Nell had the top score among the tournament's five flights with a 10-over 150 led by an opening round 74 on Saturday.
Other Flight winners, along with respective scores, included Austin Steele (B, 155), Craig McDade (C, 163), James Bussey (D, 158) and Mark Smith (E, 173).
Wayne Hudgins won the 'Cotton Pickers' division for players 60-over with a two-day total of 156 capped off with a strong closing round of 74 on Sunday.
