Third trip could be charm for Newnan standout

by Doug Gorman

Annie Swords golf career just took another giant leap forward on Wednesday.

Swords, who is already heading to next week’s USGA Girls Junior Championship (see related story), punched her ticket to an even bigger tournament when she qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur in August.

Swords shot a 3-over par, 75 at the Bear Creek Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Wednesday to earn her spot in the field

It took a birdie on No. 18 to get her into the U.S. Women’s Ametur which will be held at the Nassau Country Club on Long Island, N.Y. from Aug. 4-10.

“I really didn’t know I had qualified until after I walked off the course,” she said by phone. “It is just really exciting get the chance to play in this event.”

As of Wednesday, she was one of only five players from Georgia to qualify for the annual tournament first held in 1895.

The list includes Johns Creek star Janet Mao, who played for Milton High School’s Class AAAAAA state champions in 2012.

The US Amateur is often a sneak preview for future LPGA Stars. Julie Inkster won it three straight times from 1980-82.

Former Georgia standout Vike Goetze, who later played on the LPGA Tour, won it in 1989 and 92. Current LPGA standout Morgan Pressel won it in 2005.

“I played really well today,” she said. “I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s been busy, but I am really excited.”

Next week’s trip to the USGA Girls Junior Amateur will be the third for Swords over the last four years.
