Wild weekend for Bedrosian, Smith in bullpen efforts

With his father Steve watching from the Turner Field stands, at left, Cam Bedrosian made a pair of appearances against the hometown Braves last weekend. The East Coweta graduate was called up to the major leagues earlier this month from Double-A Arkansas.

In a stretch that included Friday the 13th and a full moon, Coweta’s two major league relievers went through a wild weekend.

Cam Bedrosian’s homecoming against the Atlanta Braves as a member of the Los Angeles Angels included a pair of appearances in front of friends and family at Turner Field, the first of which in his first potential save opportunity on Saturday in the bottom of the 10th of an eventual 11-6 win.

An inning that included an unfortunate balk for the former East Coweta High standout continued with an infield single to shortstop and a broken bat bloop to right by Jason Heyward that tied the game.

Bedrosian eventually got out of the jam by getting B.J. Upton to groundout before right-fielder Kole Calhoun made a diving grab on another bloop flyball by brother Justin Upton.

A night later on Father’s Day, Bedrosian entered the bottom of the seventh against the Braves and ran into some more tough luck after striking out Jordan Schafer to open the inning. Heyward again foiled the 22-year-old, this time with a solo blast that cleared the center-field fence before later giving up two-strike singles to B.J. Upton and Evan Gattis.

In between, Atlanta added another run on a wild pitch that scored Upton.

Bedrosian’s ERA jumped to 10.13 over his first 5.1 innings since making the jump from Double-A Arkansas. He has four strikeouts over the span and has only yielded one walk since a rough outing in Houston on June 5 following his major-league debut against the Astros.

The Angels wrap up a four-game series in Cleveland on Thursday before returning home to face division-rival Texas.

SMITH PICKS UP WIN DESPITE COUGHING UP FIRST HOMER OF SEASON: Saturday night wasn’t much kinder to Milwaukee reliever and Newnan native Will Smith, who spent time working out with Bedrosian in the offseason.

On Saturday, Smith earned his first victory of the season after blowing a save opportunity. While pitching the eighth inning, Smith gave up a 1-out game-tying homer to Cincinnati Reds leadoff hitter Billy Hamilton in an otherwise harmless outing that included a pair of strikeouts.

The blast was the first homer allowed by the 6-foot-5, 250-pound lefty since Sept. 25 as a member of the Kansas City Royals before being traded in the offseason for outfielder Norichika Aoki.

On Sunday, Smith continued to pitch strong while picking up his 15th ‘hold’ of the season, third most in the National League. He now has a 1.10 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 32.2 innings pitched.

Milwaukee began a three-game series at Arizona on Tuesday before traveling to Colorado on Friday.
