Owen picks up first career win in NPF

by Chris Goltermann

Four games into her career, Alison Owen is already picking up steam as one of the newest member of the Akron Racers in the National Pro Fastpitch softball league.

The former East Coweta star pitcher who set career and single-season records on the mound at Mississippi State, earned her first career victory last Thursday against the Pennsylvania Rebellion while allowing just one run over five innings.

In her last three appearances, Owen has held opponents to three runs over 12 innings while walking just two batters.

The efforts have helped Owen lower her ERA to 3.23 after struggling in her debut against the Chicago Bandits on May 30.

Most opponents have succeeded only by way of the long ball, hitting four homers to account for four of the six runs allowed by Owen this season.

After finishing well below .500 last year, the Racers are out to a 7-5 start in the four-team league. Along with Owen, Akron added newcomers Hannah Campbell and Lannah Campbell to its pitching staff.

“They're definitely getting comfortable on the mound,” said Racers veteran hurler Rachele Fico in a recent news release. “They're starting to utilize their strengths more effectively instead of worrying about what the batter's strengths are. They're trusting all the work they've put in that has gotten them this far and they're seeing results right now. I'm so happy for them.”
