The 2014 high school baseball may be over and done, but the accolades for county players haven’t stopped.

Last weekend, Northgate seniors James Poropatic and Blake Whitney competed as members of the Southwest Region team in this year’s Georgia Dugout Club Senior All-State Games held at Golden Park in Columbus.

A total of 96 seniors were selected from four regional areas for the showcase event held Friday and Saturday. Teams played three games in round-robin play over two days. The event also included a Home-Run Derby and a banquet featuring Hugh Buchanan, former Parkview High head baseball coach and current Braves scout.

Whitney finished the season with a 3-3 record and a 3.29 ERA while pitching a season-high 51 innings for the Vikings this spring. He pitched four scoreless innings against eventual Class AAAAA state champion Houston County in Game 1 of a first-round best of three playoff series.

One of Whitney’s three victories came in a complete-game effort in a 3-2 win over rival McIntosh.

Poropatic, a starting outfielder for a Northgate team that finished 16-12 overall, batted .347 with 19 RBIs in his final varsity season while making a team-high 101 plate appearances atop the Vikings batting order. The senior center-fielder also led the team in runs with 29.
