Swords falls in quarterfinals of GSGA Match Play Championship

Newnan resident Annie Swords closed this year’s GSGA Women’s Match Play Championship at Canongate-on-White Oak on Friday after falling to top-seeded Danielle Davis of St. Simons Island 1-up in the quarterfinal round.

Swords, a senior at The Heritage School, began her week qualifying for match play with a solid showing during the stroke play part of the tournament after shooting 3-over par and qualifying as the No. 8 seed.

She defeated Lawrenceville’s Lauren Court 2 and 1 to open match-play, before moving on to face Davis.

Against Davis, Swords took an early lead going three up through the first seven holes after winning holes No. 1, 3 and 7, but Davis rallied back by taking holes No. 8, 10 and 11 to even up the match. Davis then went 2-up after winning at 14 and 16.

Swords still had life left on the final two holes, cutting Davis’ lead back to 1-up after winning at No. 17.

But on the 18th hole, both golfers connected for par as Davis advanced to play fifth-seeded Mercedes Huarte in the semifinals.

Huarte, however, knocked off the tournament’s No. 1 seed with a 2 and 1 decision to reach the finals against Johns Creek High School standout and No. 2 seeded Janet Mao this morning at 8 a.m. for the championship.

Mao began match play beating Tiffany King 3 and 2, Taylorsville’s Hannah Mae Deems 2 and 1 and Alpharetta’s Amaria Alexander 3 and 2.

Swords is a tournament veteran having played in the USGA Girls Amateur in both 2011 and 2013.
