14-year-old title leads efforts from Centerfield in PCB trip

Centerfield Baseball Academy’s 14-year-old baseball team, coached by Walt Sholar along with student assistant Ty Herring, captured a championship in the Grand Slam Memorial Day Baseball Beach Blast in Panama City, Fla. It was the team’s sixth championship effort since March. Prior to the trip, Centerfield’s 14-under squad won USSSA Tournaments in Peachtree City (March 8), Douglasville (March 22), LaGrange (March 30) and Senoia (April 26). They recently won championship effort while going 4-1 at the Mother’s Day Saturday Shoot-out on May 10 in McDonough. Team members include (alphabetically) Jacob Blair, Austin Brown, Dominic Davanzo, Parker Dean, Cayden Herring, Dylan High, Lucas Mapp, Joshua Perry, Matthew Ralich, Andrew Reamer, Elliott Schubert, Hamilton Schubert, Clint Sellers, William Wilbanks and Mekhi Winkles. 


Teams representing Centerfield Baseball Academy returned home from Panama City, Fla. with multiple trophies from last weekend’s Grand Slam Memorial Day Baseball Beach Blast including a championship in the 14-under division.

Centerfield’s 14-under lineup, coached by Walt Sholar, defeated the Panhandle Sox 2-1 in Sunday’s final while finishing the tournament with a 3-1 record. It was the sixth championship effort by the team since March and first outside of Georgia during the season.

Prior to the trip, Centerfield’s 14-under squad won USSSA Tournaments in Peachtree City (March 8), Douglasville (March 22), LaGrange (March 30) and Senoia (April 26). They recently won championship effort while going 4-1 at the Mother’s Day Saturday Shoot-out on May 10 in McDonough.

Since March 8, the team has now compiled a record of 21-4 while avenging the last of those four losses in the Memorial Day tournament.

Centerfield, which is also assisted by Newnan High junior Ty Herring, opened the five-team tournament with a 7-3 loss to the Panhandle Sox on Saturday before bouncing back for an 11-1 victory over the Bay County Storm to complete pool play.

They then advanced to the championship early Sunday by dominating the Traveling Eagles of Niceville, Fla. 11-4, before capping off the weekend with the 2-1 win in the finals.

Centerfield’s 11-under team, led by Jonathan Sholar, also reached the Beach Blast championship game while finishing 4-1 for the tournament before falling to the No. 1 seeded Young Guns from Enterprise, Ala.

It was the third consecutive tournament where Centerfield’s 11-under team reached the finals after going 4-0 over consecutive weekends to win USSSA tournaments locally in McDonough and LaGrange on May 10 and May 17.

The effort included a pair of victories in pool play while outscoring opponents 20-7 before advancing in the championship bracket with an 11-5 victory over the Niceville (Fla.) Mustangs and a 8-5 win over the host Beach Bashers of Panama City.

Team members include (alphabetically) Brady Anderson, Wallace Bass, Reid Brass, Zachary Carlton, Glenn Chambers, Chance Daniel, Antonio Gleaton, Yates Kelleher, Thomas Morenzi, Andrew Rich, Hunter Scarbrough, Jack Seppings and Ian Williams.

Centerfield also had its 10-under, 12-under and 13-under teams competing in Panama City last weekend.

The Centerfield 12-under team finished second in the Mother’s Day Shootout in McDonough. It’s 13-under lineup went undefeated in tournament victories at the Tyrone Spring Class on April 26 and the Rawlings TandG Allsports Classic on April 5.

Centerfield’s 6-under Tomahawks also won the Senoia Classic on April 26.
