Lashley, Vikings relay denied chances to reach finals

JEFFERSON — The 2014 varsity boys track season ended a day earlier than hoped after Northgate and East Coweta had athletes denied trips to this year’s running finals of the Georgia Olympics.

Indians junior hurdler Kevin Lashley and the Vikings 1,600-meter relay came just shy of qualifying among the top eight during Friday’s preliminaries.

In the Class AAAAA meet, Northgate’s relay of Logan Langner, Malik Wade, Jaelin Ware and Benton Washington placed ninth overall in 3:24.40 while competing in heat one. But five of the eight teams in heat two were able to advance including Miller Grove with an eighth-place finish of 3:23.72.

Lashley, meanwhile, placed ninth by an even slimmer margin in the Class AAAAAA preliminaries of the 300 intermediate hurdles. Battling with Josiah Robinson of Centennial in the last of two heats, the East Coweta standout finished in 38.85, just one-tenth of a second behind Robinson for the last of eight qualifying positions.

This year’s GHSA Championships started strong in field events with Newnan senior Josh Hill placing second in the Class AAAAAA long jump, East Coweta senior Dartavyous Walker taking sixth in the AAAAAA discus and Newnan senior Stephon Brownlee placing seventh in the triple jump.
