Vikings qualify for Class AAAAA state tournament

Northgate's boys golf team joined its girls in clinching a berth in respective Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA State Championships in two weeks.

The Vikings finished in the top-eight on Monday among a competitive field at Canongate-on-White Oak that was led by Lakeside-Evans' team score of 289.

Led by Nathan Garner's 1-over 73, Northgate finished sixth overall while 12 strokes ahead of the cut of 330 needed to qualify for the AAAAA boys state tournament at Bartram Trail Golf Club in Evans.

The Lady Vikings previously advanced to the AAAAA girls event at Jones Creek Golf Course in Augusta with a Region 4-AAAAA championship. Newnan's boys and girls lineups will travel to respective Class AAAAAA tournaments, also in the Augusta area, after winning 3-AAAAAA titles. The Cougars travel to Champions Retreat in Evans while the Lady Cougars advanced to play at Gordon Lakes in Fort Gordon.

On Monday, Chris Whitney followed Garner in the Viking scoring with a 77. Senior Maddux Lytle added an 80 and Tanner Lee completed the scoring with an 84.

Kell (298), McIntosh (307) ,Creekview (309), Lee County (313), Pope (318) and Flowery Branch (328) also qualified for the Class AAAAA boys tournament.

East Coweta's girls played in Monday's AAAAAA girls sectional at Heron Bay in Locust Grove. Results were unavailable at deadline on Tuesday.
