Wolves, Lady Knights jump in front after field events

Evans' Madison Weir Clears the bar at 4-10 in the high jump during Monday's field events at the Coweta County Middle School Athletic League Track & Field Championships at Garland Shoemake Stadium. The meet concludes with running finals on Thursday. 

Arnall's girls and the Lee Middle boys track team took first steps toward repeating as respective Coweta County Middle School Athletic League champions during Monday's four field events at East Coweta's Garland Shoemake Stadium.

The Timberwolves scored 47.75 points to grab an early lead on East Coweta (31) and Arnall (26.75) in the boys division. Smokey Road (13), Evans (4.75) and Madras (.75) rounded out the six schools after day one.

In the girls' team points race, the Lady Knights hold a six-point lead on Evans heading into Thursday's running finals at Shoemake Stadium.

Arnall led scorers with 40 points, followed by the Lady Cougars (34) and Lee's girls (25) in a tight race atop the standings. Trailing the leaders are East Coweta (13), Madras (7) and Smokey Road (5).

Lee's boys captured three of Monday's four events while picking up wins from Gerald Green in the long jump, Jalen Smith in the shot and PJ. Harris in the discus as Timberwolves also placed 1-2 in both the long jump and discus.

Green topped the field in the long jump at 19-3 ahead of teammate Josh Martin (18-6).

In the boys discus, Harris and Smith went neck-and-neck with top tosses over 124 feet. Harris held on for first at 125-9 while Smith settled for second at 124.

Smith, however, was able to squeak past East Coweta's Josh Render by two inches in the shot with a top throw of 44-10.

Arnall's boys were able to keep pace with Brayden Carey's victory of 5-4 in the high jump along with third-place efforts from Chase Manning in the long jump and Juan Calipolitti in the discus.

Also staying within range were East Coweta's boys led by secondplace efforts by Render in the shot and Amarii Strickland in the high jump. The Indians had two scorers in all four events while showcasing their depth.

Arnall's girls picked up 20 of its 40 points from standout Chasidhe Godfrey from victories in the long jump and the shot put. Godfrey and teammate Felicia Hendrix finished first and second in the long jump led by a lead of 15-8. Godfrey also held off Evans standout Destiny Derring with a mark of 30-2 in the shot.

The Lady Knights also picked up a second-place finish from Scarlett Steadman in the high jump.

Derring also was third in the discus for Evans' girls, who were led by Madison Ware's high-jump victory of 4-10.

Lee's girls were led by Bonnie Stewart's second-place finish in the discus and Samantha Bartholomew's thirdplace effort in the high jump. Stewart was also fourth in the long jump for the Lady Timberwolves.
