Trinity drops tough 8-6 loss in region play

There have been years where at Trinity Christian baseball team could have looked at an 8-6 loss in region play as a moral victory.

Not in 2014, however.

The Lions didn’t seem at all satisfied with their second consecutive two-run loss against one of the top two teams in Region 1-AAA on Friday.

“It was just one of those nights,” said Trinity first year head coach Brian Chimelewski. “I told our guys it makes me mad because we deserved to win today.”

The losses kept the Lions in third place but with their playoff destiny still in their own hands. Following a non-region game on Friday against Crown Athletics for Senior Night, Trinity travels to The Heritage School on Tuesday to complete a home-and-home 1-AAA series, having defeated the Hawks earlier in the season.

Heritage hosted Loganville Christian (7-5, 5-0) on Tuesday.

Second-place Dominion (9-7, 4-1) benefited heavily from its defense against the Lions, making several diving grabs off good swings.

Trinity, which was led by Jake Elrod’s 3-for-3 performance, tied the game at 2-2 and then took a short-lived 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth before Dominion caught several breaks in the bottom of the inning to push a four-run lead.

Elrod also drove in two runs and Seth Davis went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Kenny Swaggart also finished 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

“We made two mistakes all day and they got a run on each of them,” Chimelewski. “I bet they had seven or eight leaping plays to rob doubles. We’re right there. We’ve gotten to a point where we go into games today expecting to win. That’s a change for these guys.”

It was as frustrating a finish as Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Loganville despite six solid innings from pitcher Cole Elrod, who has now held opponents without an earned run over his last 18 ? innings.

Elrod also struck out seven in six innings while taking a tough loss. Leighton Cannon had two hits for Trinity.
