Lady Vikings clinch berth in tournament

Northgate's girls tennis team followed their boys teammates with a berth into this year's state playoffs after finishing fourth in its host Region 4-AAAAA tournament on Thursday. The Lady Vikings clinched a spot in the Class AAAAA tournament with a 3-2 victory over Ola before falling to eventual region champion Starr's Mill. The team then dropped a 3-1 decision in a tight match with Union Grove in the consolation finals for state seeding.

Both Northgate teams will enter the Class AAAAA playoffs as a No. 4 team and will travel to Lakeside-Evans next week.

In their clinching match over Ola, the Lady Vikings picked up wins from Danielle Rankin at No. 1 singles and relied on a sweep in doubles play to advance. All three lines won in straight sets including Rankin's 6-3, 6-0 decision.

At No. 1 doubles, Northgate's team of Sarah Edmonds and Sarah Guilot dominated a 6-0, 6-1 victory while teammates Lauren Handley and Sydney Wells earned a 6-2, 6-0 decision.

Edmonds and Guilot added a 6-4, 6-3 win against Union Grove in a match that came down to two-hour marathons that ended in tiebreakers at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions.

Rankin dropped a second-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles en route to a tough 6-4, 6-7, 2-6 loss. At No. 2 singles, Hayley Hasberger battled back for the Lady Vikings, tying the match before falling 6-7, 6-0, 2-6.
