Lady Indians, Lady Cougars blank opponents

Not every local high school spring sports event was a victim to the rain on Tuesday.

East Coweta and Newnan's girls soccer teams prepared for the upcoming Class AAAAAA state playoffs by shutting out opponents on a bitter night in April.

The L ady I nd i a n s improved their record to 11-3 by defeating Whitewater 2-0 at Garland Shoemake Stadium.

Lynnsey Danford had a goal and an assist to lead East Coweta.

Nikki Brandley also scored for the Lady Indians while Ren Waters added an assist in the victory.

Newnan's girls soccer lineup also braved what hoped to be a final chill of the 2014 season for a 1-0 victory in non-region play against Carrollton on the turf of Grisham Stadium.

Senior Erin Bright scored the game winner for the Lady Cougars in the second half after neither team could manage a goal in the opening 40 minutes.

Newnan returns to nonregion play Friday at home against Fayette County. The Lady Cougars will advance to the Class AAAAAA state playoffs as the No. 3 seed out of Region 3-AAAAAA. BOYS EAST COWETA 1, MCEACHERN 0: At home, the Indians returned from spring break with its third straight victory.

After pulling out backto- back Coweta Cup victories over rivals Newnan and Northgate prior to last week's break, East Coweta held on for a one-goal victory decided on Zac Slaton's tally off an assist from Diego Velazquez.

Both East Coweta lineups return to action on Friday at Decatur in the Lady Indians regular season finale.
