Consistency pays off for Echols

In a year where all three of the county’s GHSA programs finished below .500, Northgate’s girls basketball team wasn’t alone in struggling to win basketball games.

But Lady Vikings head coach Matt Trucks was never concerned about the effort coming from junior guard Ebonee Echols. Echols was as versatile — and equally dedicated — as any of Trucks’ players on the floor during the 2013-14 season, averaging over a dozen points per game and contributing in nearly every major category, including hustle, during a tough 7-18 campaign.

Her efforts earned her this year’s Newnan Times Herald All-County Player of the Year after averaging 13.5 points per game, 2.5 assists, 3 steals and one rebound per game.

“She just works hard all the time,” said Trucks of the three-sport varsity standout who equally has excelled in softball and track. “She’s a great ath- lete who hates to lose. She is so consistent.”

Echols is verbally committed to play softball at Michigan State.

At one point in the basketball season in a game against Whitewater, Echols hurt her ankle, but insisted in hobbling back on the floor before finally being taken out by Trucks when the game got out of hand late.

“I told her at the end when I took her out the last time, you don’t have to prove anything else to me,” said Trucks.

This year’s All-County honorees were split equally between all three programs, each of which earned two selections.

Newnan was represented by point guard and leading scorer Metryes Geter, who averaged 10.7 points per game and earned All-Region 3-AAAAAA honors.

Chaycie Goggins also earned All-County honors with her rebounding on both ends of the floor and playing solid defense for Newnan,

The highlight of her season came against rival East Coweta when she hit the game-winning

shot at the buzzer to beat the Lady Indians 56-55 in the first meeting this year between the two teams.

There was a changing of the guard at East Coweta this year as former assistant Jared Wag- goner took over for long-time coach Paula Jones.

It didn’t take long for mem- bers of the Lady Indians to buy into Waggoner’s program as Kiandrea Hall and Quintina Roberts each made the All- County team.

Hall completed her final year of high school basketball by averaging a little more than 8 points per game.

Roberts will return for her senior season in 2014-15 after chipping 11 points per game last season to lead the team in scoring.

Northgate’s Katie Mitchell joined her teammate Echols on the All-County squad.

The junior guard earned honorable mention recognition for Region 3-AAAAA after tossing in 10.5 points per game and averaging 3 assists, 1.5 rebounds and nearly two steals.

Newnan’s Destani Parks and Bodecia Zachery each earned honorable mention honors.

Parks finished the season as the Lady Cougars’ second leading scorer with 7.7 points per game. Zachary was a defensive specialist for the Lady Cougars and turned in solid rebounding and shot blocking efforts.

Sophomore Eboni Wil- liams also was among honor- able mentions for East Coweta after scoring in double figures in most games and finished with a 10.5 points per game average.

Northgate’s Rose Barrera closed out her high school career with a solid season which included averaging 6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists and two steals.
