Newnan tennis lineups got a chance to play at the University of Georgia’s Dan McGill Tennis Center in matches against Clarke Central on Wednesday while sweeping victories in 4-1 decisions.

Newnan tennis lineups made the most of a chance to play in a college setting on Wednesday. Both the Lady Cougars and Cougars defeated Clarke-Central 4-1 in matches played at the Dan McGill Tennis Center at the University of Georgia.

“The kids had a blast,” said Newnan tennis coach Hap Hines. “It was a great day all around.”

While taking four of five lines in each contest against Clarke Central, Wednesday’s matches weren’t without their share of drama.

Playing a full three-set match, Landon Goolsby rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision for the Cougars at No. 2 singles on an afternoon where Newnan’s boys swept in singles play.

Top-player William Ballou stayed “on fire” according to Hines in a 6-0, 6-0 victory while Cougar No. 3 standout Mikey Miller also won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

Newnan’s boys also split doubles matches led by a marathon victory by Stewart Rand and Sam Thomas. The Cougars’ No. 1 pairing went to a third-set tiebreaker while rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) victory.

At No. 2 doubles, Bennett Souter and Dalton Ayers dropped a 4-6, 1-6 decision.

Newnan’s girls, meanwhile, swept doubles matches on Wednesday against Clarke Central in straight sets.

At the No. 1 position, Lollie Davis and Olivia Dumas earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory while Emily Ferguson and Ansley Knight teamed for a 6-1, 6-1 effort at No. 2 doubles.

The Lady Cougars also earned victories from Carly Griffies and Caroline Davis, respectively, at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Griffies won 6-1, 6-3 while Davis earned a 6-2, 6-1 decision.

Newnan’s top singles player Gray Griffies battled in a 3-6, 2-6 loss.

Both teams return to action on April 16 for the start of the Region 3-AAAAAA tournament at the Summit Family YMCA. The Cougars earned the No. 1 boys seed and a first-round bye while the Lady Cougars will be seeded second.
