Girls teams earn victories in non-region games

Girls lacrosse teams from East Coweta, Northgate and Newnan each earned victories on Tuesday, while Newnan and East Coweta boys each lost non-region games.

The Lady Indians picked up their second victory of the season in a trip to Parkview, winning 13-6, while Northgate’s girls defeated Darlington on the road.

The Lady Vikings improved their overall record to 3-5-1.

Newnan’s girls, meanwhile, responded from an early one-goal deficit at home with seven unanswered scores in an 11-6 victory over Union Grove at Drake Stadium.

Down 1-0 over 10 minutes into the game, the Lady Cougars picked up a pair of goals from Courtney Darrow in the span of 49 seconds to take a lead for good.

Darrow added her third goal with 5:53 to play after Union Grove’s girls pulled wo within a 9-5 deficit.

Savannah Ohliger, meanwhile, scored three of her game-high five goals in the final 10:30 of the opening half, the first off an assist from Darrow.

Following a goal by Sable Hawkins to push a 4-1 lead, Ohliger put together two more tllies before halftime, the latter of which coming with just one second on the clock.

Ohliger also had two assists in the victory while Sidney Overton and Anne Jarrett added goals for Newnan (5-4).

Union Grove dropped its record to 2-6 overall.

Hawkins and Megan Carr each led the Lady Cougars with six ground balls apiece while Hope Overton finished with four saves in goal.

Despite 15 saves from Newnan goalie Jordan Surrett, the Cougars were unable to pull out a win on Tuesday, falling 14-10 at Whitewater.

Newnan goals by Zach Keene and Mike McMahon to open the second quarter tied the game at 4-4, the latter with 9:38 left until halftime.

But the Wildcats responded with four unanswered goals to take a lead for good.

After picking up goals from George Coria and Spencer Smith, on an assist from Corria, to pull within a 9-6 halftime deficit, Newnan tried to rally back in the final period.

The second of Austin Ohliger’s threee goals pulled the Cougars back to within 11-7 and Keene followed just 11 seconds later to close the gap within just three with 11:01 to play.

Whitewater finally put the game with three goals over a two-minute span.

Caleb McHugh also scored for Newnan, which fell to 2-9 overall.

East Coweta’s boys lost their second consecutive game on Tuesday, falling 8-4 to Marist, which is ranked 15th among all boys teams in the GHSA.
