Heritage drops one-goal games to Holy Spirit

Respective soccer teams from The Heritage School came up just short in quests to catch up with lineups from Holy Spirit in the GISA Region 1-AAA standings on Wednesday, each dropping 2-1 decisions.

The Hawks were victims of an own goal in their loss, which featured 11 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Cole Jones. Heritage’s boys fell to 9-2 overall and 6-2 in region play with both of its losses coming to unbeaten Holy Spirit (8-0-1, 7-0).

Jack Cranford kept the game close after scoring for the Hawks on a shot from the top of the box that carried into the upper-left corner.

A loss by The Heritage School’s girls was just as tough to swallow, especially knowing that it all but snapped the program’s streak of six consecutive region soccer titles.

The Lady Hawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime on Sullivan Wilkins’ goal off an assist from Kate Everett, but couldn’t hold the momentum.

Heritage fell to 7-2 in region play and 7-3 overall. Holy Spirit’s girls can clinch the region on Friday at home with a win over Trinity Christian.

Both Heritage lineups are off until April 15 when the team hosts Dominion Christian.
