Newnan holds off Tigers in 10 innings

Newnan's baseball team had to work overtime Thursday on the road against Region 3-AAAAAA foe Douglas County, but came away with a 6-5 victory in 10 innings.

'This was really a big win for us,' said Newnan head coach Marc Gilmore. 'To win on the road is big. We didn't get a lot of hits, but we came through when we had to.'

The Cougars used 17 of their 21 players on the roster in the victory.

Newnan (5-9, 2-1) pushed the winning run across on an infield error i n the top of the 10th that allowed Chase Jones to score.

Jones started the 10th inning with a single, went to second a passed ball and moved to third on Drew Oldham's sacrifice before the error allowed in the eventual game-winning run. The Cougars then held off the Tigers in the bottom of the 10th to secure the region win.

Three Newnan pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts in the win.

Sta r ter Sawyer Steele accounted for the five while pitching into the fifth and Sam Sowerbrower added three in 1 2/3 innings.

Senior Jake Kneidel pitched the final three innings, adding three strikeouts while picking up the win.

Newnan scored four times in the top of the second inning. The Cougars took the lead with four straight hits from the bottom of the order.

Douglas County (6-6, 0-2) cut the lead to 4-3 when it pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the third after Tyler Arnold doubled and Logan Tilman singled to spark the comeback for the Tigers.

Newnan increased the lead to 5-3 in the fourth inning when Cody Barnes walked stole second, and scored on Justin Groover's base hit.

Douglas County added single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game, but neither team could push a run across in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

After Newnan scored the goahead run in the 10th, Douglas County was retired in order to end the game in the bottom of the 10th.

The two teams close out the series today, weather permitting, at Newnan's Joe Pope Field.
