East Coweta stays unbeaten in region

East Coweta pounded out 15 hits and committed just one error en route to a 20-4 victory over Region 3-AAAAAA foe Langston Hughes in a game called after five innings.

It was the first of three-game Region 3-AAAAAA series between lineups this week.

Ahead 7-3 after three innings, the Indians scored nine times in the top of the fourth to put the game out of reach and remain undefeated in division play.

The victory improved East Coweta’s record to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in region play. Langston Hughes dropped to 2-9 and 0-1.

Langston Hughes scored three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the first only to have East Coweta score 17 times over its last four at bats. .

Seniors Cameron Smith, Matthew Meyer, and Bryce Gemmel led the way at the plate. Smith finished with three hits, scored twice and finished with 2 RBIs. Meyer was 3-for 3 with five RBIs. Gemmel went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and four runs scored.

Mason Meyer pitched three innings and struck two to pick up the victory.

Graden Treadwell pitched two innings and struck out one in relief.

The Indians finished with eight extra-base hits.

Gemmel finished with two triples and Devonte Brown added two doubles as part of the Indians’ offensive fireworks.

East Coweta also stole nine bases including two each from Gemmel and Smith.

The Indians, now on a five-game win streak, were coming off Monday’s 7-4 win over Northside-Columbus at home.

In Monday’s win, Smith, Nick Pippen, Stephen Cruver and Austin Jones each had two hits and Pippen and Cruver finished with a pair of RBIs including one apiece in a decisive sixth-inning against the Patriots (6-4), who used five pitchers that together allowed 10 walks.

The Patriots outhit East Coweta 8-7 and added an unearned run off a pair of East Coweta errors against senior starter Austin Bellamy.

Bellamy retired five of his first six Northside batters and didn’t run into major trouble until the sixth on consecutive hits from the Patriots’ No. 4 and 5 hitters, Victor Ballesteros and D.J. Arroyo, the latter an RBI triple that put the team back ahead 3-2.

TRINITY CHRISTIAN 24, LAGRANGE ACADEMY 0, four innings: On the road Monday, Josh Henry held LaGrange without a hit while improving his record to 3-0 on the mound for the Lions.

Henry had two hits and 3 RBIs in the victory as Trinity (4-4 overall) got back on track after a disappointing Region 1-AAA loss to Loganville Christian at home on Friday, falling 6-2.

On Monday, Devin Colburn had a homer and four walks as the Lions used a bevy of free passes from LaGrange pitchers to coast to an easy victory.

Trinity returns to 1-AAA play on Thursday against The Weber School.
