Northgate pulls off region sweep over Whitewater

FAYETTEVILLE—If the Northgate boys soccer team was looking for somebody to step up big Friday night in their game against Region 4-AAAAA foe Whitewater, they found it in goalkeeper Cooper Morrison.

Morrison came up with sev- eral key stops in regulation, but it was his play through over- time and penalty kicks that helped lift Northgate to a 2-1 decision.

The Vikings keeper stopped two PKs and also added a suc- cessful kick of his own that helped make the difference when head coach Bryan Hicks gave him a chance to score after teams finished overtime tied at 1-1.

“Cooper came up really big for us tonight,” said Hicks. “He guessed right both times on those stops. This was a really big win for us.”

The victory pushed North- gate to 3-2 in 4-AAAAA smack in playoff contention again as Whitewater (6-2, 3-1) suffered its first region loss of the year.

Brian Rudd, Brandon Stahl and Jamie Skalski also added penalty kicks for the Vikings (3-2-1 overall) after the two teams failed to score in the two overtime sessions.

Northgate was coming off last Friday’s 3-1 region loss to Ola and has played within two goals of all seven of its oppo- nents this year.

The Vikings fell behind 1-0 on a Wildcats goal at the 20-minute mark, but it could have been worse had it not been for Morrison and the Northgate defense.

Robert McNeal’s successful slide tackle late in the first half kept Whitewater from convert- ing just before the break. Mor- rison also made two key saves in the closing minutes before halftime.

Northgate got on the score- board with its first goal when Kevin Cheng was pulled down in the box setting up a penalty kick.

Skalski added a goal in regu- lation for the Vikings.

Early on, Jack Cheng had a shot on goal early for the Vikings, but it was turned away and Skalski had a chance to score on a breakaway in the first half, but it also missed the mark.
